The main thing that jumps out at me when I look back is how JavaScript has blown up! The back-end programming languages at the fore front were Python, Ruby and PHP. In the last year or so I've been hearing less and less of Ruby, it's popularity has waned over the past couple of years. Why? For example when you make a change in your CSS, instead of FTP-ing those changes up the wire, you can simple save and view the changes in your browser almost instantly. Also, image having to build out a new feature on a website, and doing all of the development on the live site. That would mean visitors to the live site would see weirdness whilst you're pushing changes up to the site to view them; not a good scenario!
