Karolina Sowinska - The Lotus of Lake Suburbia
Lake Suburbia was known for white lotus plant. Every summer, it was harvested and traded, making the town’s foundation. For hundreds of years, no other plant has grown on the lake. No other plant could compete with the white lotus. However, one extraordinary winter, a black lotus mysteriously appeared on the lake.
It was a real sensation for the small community of about one thousand people. At least a hundred curious men and women would take a walk up the hill each day where they could see the flower floating in the middle of the lake. It was understood that the flower would soon perish in the uninhabitable and foreign to its natural conditions.
However, as time moved forward, the dwellers of Lake Suburbia slowly returned to their normal activities, paying less attention to the exotic flower.
August was approaching fast. It was an important month for the citizens of Lake Suburbia. Every August, the white lotus buds, Lake Suburbia’s cherished emblem, were beginning to blossom.
Nonetheless, unlike the previous summer, and the hundreds of summers before, when thousands of white lotus flowers opened up and floated in quiet confidence at the summery lake shore, this time the buds remained closed. The object of inspiration, trade, tourism, the subject of the local anthem and ancient prayers, the very fibre of Lake Suburbia perished in most bizarre circumstances.
“It will blossom, of course it will blossom” you could hear merchants repeating at the Market Place. The hot air suspended over the town and it was hard to breathe despite the early hours of the day. Someone in a white apron passed through the market hurriedly.
-“Strawberries? Strawberries for our intellectual? They won’t be any good tomorrow. Special price!” - exclaimed one of the sellers in the direction of the rushing man.
-”Pardon me, Mr Brown. I have no time. I think I saw one white lotus opening up yesterday towards the end of the evening. It was getting dark, and I could not tell for sure, but I am going to check it now”
-”I told y'all it will blossom! Of course it will blossom. A scientist says so!”
The scientist disappeared on the horizon, watched by the curious crowd.
No white petals were seen on the lake that day.
With each passing day of August, darker and darker clouds were hanging over the uneasy, nervous heads of Lake Suburbia inhabitants. Eventually, thunderstorms wrecked havoc over the town, causing floods and ruining fields of corn and banana plants.
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. If only I had prayed more for white lotus, when it was still time!” whispered a junior ordinand kneeling in a confessional. I cannot remember any more sins, Father!”
“As a penance, pray more. Pray for the white lotus to blossom five times a day. It may blossom any moment if we continue to have faith. Absolved!” spoke the priest.
September has passed. It became clear that white lotus would not opkken.
The town recovered from the damage caused by the frequent and heavy thunderstorms, and no one suffered from hunger. And yet, a different kind of sickness started plaguing Lake Suburbia.
Wind stopped blowing. There was no rain, and no sun in the sky. It was hard to distinguish between day and night, as the town was cloaked in permanently dim light of the invisible distant stars. Markets would not open and no one spoke to each other. Silence and stillness permeated every fibre of Lake Suburbia.
I could not help but cry. Tears kept welling up in my eyes, unstoppable. A few weeks have passed by, and, after this long time of isolation, I finally decided to go outside. I was relieved to have been grazed in my ankles with a gentle puff of wind. The sky looked somewhat brighter than what I had remembered.
Perhaps driven by a sense of nostalgia, I went on a walk up the hill to see the lotusless lake.
To my greatest bewilderment, the lake was not there. I looked around to make sure I had climbed the right hill, but I was in the intended place. Nothing else around had changed. Standing at the shore of what used to be the very heart of Lake Suburbia, staring at the meadow that sprung up in its place, I let rays of sunshine gently touch my face.
I ran down the hill straight to the Market Place, smiling. I had to tell everyone.

Karolina Sowinska - Nothing has changed
Tear after tear after tear
Hello
I am still here
The old me
The ship that cruised along the shores of sweet impression
Embracing the eternal tailwind
Feeling it deeply in her fibres woven so tightly to never miss a single gust of emotion
Crashed
A picture so natural, so real
Weird and uncanny
You could study every knot
With or without a permission
The ship that docked in the middle of the ocean
Unmoved, sails detached
Tear after tear after tear
The ship is still there
Aloof, half-afloat,
Lonely and longing
Loving and grieving
Seeing the shore for the raw land it’s always been
With beautiful trees that grow tall to fall louder
And rivers that come and go
Tear after tear after tear
I am still here

"What is happiness?" - I found myself discussing this topic with two different people at two different parties over the last weekend. Despite it clearly being such a universal question, the humanity has not yet found a comprehensive answer that would stand the test of time. Religion, humanity's most significant attempt so far, has been pushed to the inevitable brink of obsoleteness. Left to our own devices to face chaos, we often waste our precious time away, failing to find the true source of contentment and deep enjoyment.
'Flow', a book written by a brilliant academic and a psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is the first proposition (that came to my attention) that is rooted entirely in science. Of course, as a data person, I would be drawn to it immediately. This video is my attempt at summarizing and simplifying Csikszentmihalyi's research (I do hope I did it justice!). How to be happy according to data? Let me present you the five conditions to happiness!

Who even is a data person? The data world is typically associated with Data Scientsts or Data Engineers. But then someone says that they are, in fact, a Machine Learning Engineer, or a Research Engineer, or a Data Analyst... the list goes on! The tasks that all of these data professionals perform often overlap, and most certainly they have one common denominator, namely...data. At the end of the day, we are all Data People.
Day in the life of a data person in the UK... what do we do? Is it fun? I hope you'll find answers to this question in the video! ;)

After two years in engineering, I'm moving to research this month. This is because I believe my natural talents are more suited to that area.

NLP has become very accessible with the advent of pre-trained model library such as HuggingFace. Speaking of it, HF released a completely free NLP course last week, where they cover Transformer and other NLP-related topics. Here's the link:

and it’s completely free!
It contains:
-market analysis
-explanation of what data engineers do + a case study!
-the 4-step study plan to becoming a data engineer in 6 months
***
In this video I'm elaborating on the 4-step plan. Please find the links to all the courses that I've mentioned in the video below:
1. Learn Python
I recommend following the Python for Everybody specialization course on Coursera, which is one of the most popular courses there:
http://imp.i384100.net/x9gVO3
2. Learn SQL
SQL is still the lingua franca of data. I recommend going with Learn SQL Basics for Data Science course, because it contains some chapters which are very releavant to data engineering in partcular, e.g. distributed computing with Spark
http://imp.i384100.net/QOMZ09
3. Learn Bash scripting/Linux
I wouldn't take a full course on it, but at least read a good article.
if you do prefer to take a course/guided project, I think this one is short and good:
https://www.coursera.org/projects/command-line-linux
4. Learn how to develop on the cloud, e.g. on AWS
There are a few good courses around there, but I think the Coursera one is the most comprehensive

I have created multiple videos about data engineering, including a data engineering course for beginners. Why would I advise anyone against pursuing a career in data engineering? I like being as transparent as possible - while this job will be great for many people, it might be disappointing for the others. In this video I'm outlining three reasons why not to become a data engineer.
If you'd still like to learn data engineering, I recommend following the 4 simple steps below to land you the first job interview:

In that video I talked about a canvas as a metaphor for life, and how important it is that you paint your painting according to your own vision.
I realised that the canvas metaphor has one more dimension that I didn't manage to explore in the previous videos. Namely, the proactivity of the painter.
Join me in the trip to the London National Gallary's area to finish what we started... And yes, I've brought the canvas with me.
