Trails is a four-channel touch recorder for Eurorack that captures finger movement as musical structure. Melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and control elements can be composed simultaneously through gesture and shape, then transformed in space and time to create evolving contrapuntal and polyrhythmic relationships.
With both CV and MIDI output, Trails can sit at the centre of a modular system while also controlling hardware and software instruments. Gestures can be stored across scenes, recalled in performance, and used either as smooth continuous signals or quantised musical material.

Marylou Sharrock is a musician, singer, sound artist, and DIY electronics designer. Her work blends field-recorded birdsong with custom-built hardware, creating responsive biosynthetic instruments.
In this Creators video, she discusses how Bela enables low-latency, portable instrument systems that run independently of a laptop. This setup lets her interact directly with natural environments - where birdsong becomes both material and input. She also talks about her next project (ideally using a Bela Gem) with whale sounds and communication. 💥💥

Alberto Novello (aka JesterN) is a physicist, composer, and analog media artist who explores the connection between light and sound. Trained in nuclear physics, psychoacoustics, and electronic music, he builds performances using oscilloscopes, video mixers, and laser projectors to create real-time audiovisual works.
His concept of visual listening invites audiences to experience sound and image as a single, fused signal. He’s released music on Hive Mind Records, Staalplaat, and Creative Sources, and his work has been shown at Ars Electronica, Centre Pompidou, and Museo Reina Sofía.
In this Creator video, he describes using Bela to control laser projectors with multichannel DC-coupled outputs - and how Bela Gem could help him push into new territory for audio-rate light synthesis.

Improviser, composer, and academic Lauren Sarah Hayes has spent over a decade exploring embodied approaches to electronic music. A longtime Bela user, she designs tactile, body-centric systems that make sound something you feel as much as hear.
Lauren is Associate Professor at Arizona State University and founder of PARIESA, a research group focused on enactive sonic arts. Her work spans experimental pop, noise, and free improv – and she’s performed at festivals like Moogfest, hcmf//, and ISCM World New Music Days.
As part of our Bela Creators video, Lauren shares how she used Bela in the past to create portable haptic technology systems - and how she plans to use Bela Gem in the future to move beyond the laptop.

To offer some insight into both the development of Bela Gem and its myriad applications, we have put together a series of personal interviews with both the founders of Bela as well as a few select artists, musicians and makers who are experts at employing Bela in deeply creative ways.
Yann Seznec is a sound artist and researcher based in Stockholm, Sweden. His work explores constraints-based design, experimental music, and sustainability – often through handmade audio devices that are deliberately limited in function, revealing new ways to play, perform, and listen.
A longtime Bela user, Yann is currently completing a PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where he’s investigating how constraint-driven tools can shape sonic practice. Before moving to Stockholm, he spent many years in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he worked as a freelance artist and performer and founded Lucky Frame, a creative studio for experimental video games and sound tools. From 2019 to 2021, he was Game Designer in Residence at MICA in Baltimore.
In this Creators video, Yann shares how Bela Gem will support his exploration of real-time, playable systems – and how Gem’s design and mounting system will make implementing it into projects.

And first up in our Creators series is the composer, instrument builder and veteran Bela user Rafaele Andrade. Originally from Brazil and currently based in the Netherlands, Rafaele employs in her practice a heady mix of live coding, open source approaches and instrument design. The latter is what first brought her to Bela, which she eventually used to create Knurl, a 16 string cello running SuperCollider at its core. Here, Rafaele describes her Bela journey – from the first attempts at integrating programming languages into making musical instruments to the creation of Knurl and her future visions for what’s possible with Bela Gem.

Teresa Pelinski is a final-year PhD student at the Augmented Instruments Lab at Queen Mary University of London. Her PhD is the first to be sponsored by Bela, and as part of her research she has been exploring how neural networks can support creative practice on embedded systems.
During an initial internship with Bela in 2023, Teresa began developing **pybela**, a Python library that allows real-time communication between a C++ Bela program and a Python script or Jupyter notebook. This makes it easy to send and receive data while your Bela code is running, very useful for machine learning pipelines, data-driven experiments, and real-time performance.
pybela encourages a different kind of AI practice. Instead of large black-boxed models trained on massive datasets, it supports a more experimental, embodied approach: working with small, custom datasets and creatively engaging with the limitations of embedded hardware. This plays to Bela's strengths of design for low-latency and real-time interaction.

First up is Robert Jack, a founding member of Bela, who focuses on product design and product management. Originally from Scotland, Robert studied music composition and applied mathematics before diving deep into electronic music and completing a PhD on touch in digital musical instrument design. While writing his PhD in the Augmented Instruments Lab with Andrew McPherson, he was part of the team that first formed Bela. Now based in Sicily, Robert has taught physical interaction design at Aalto University in Helsinki and product design at the Royal College of Art in London, and created Bela's in-depth Pure Data course. His work at Bela centers on making the best possible tools for designers and building electronic instruments that fully engage our sense of touch.

Patch Notes is a series of instructional videos designed to help you get the most out of Gliss and provide a source of ideas for fuelling your own experiments and discoveries. Together we will explore possibilities opened by placing Gliss in the midst of a larger patch rather than directly to its final destination, by mixing signals to combine touch control with traditional modulation sources and connecting to unlikely destinations.
The updated Gliss firmware introduces the ability to sync events in your modular system to the length of a recorded gesture, and much more besides. Upgrade for free: https://bela.io/upgrade-gliss.html
